• Dog Manners Class

    Dog Manners Class

Dog Manners Classes meet for 50 minutes once a week for 6 weeks and are for dogs over 4 months of age. There will be NO CLASS on Thursday, June 11.

Our experienced instructors make training your dog a fun and rewarding experience for people AND dogs!  In this class, we will work on building the foundation for comfort in new spaces, handler focus, stays, loose leash walking and coming when called. This introductory class will be the foundation for more advanced skills that will continue to be built in Advanced Manners. We will utilize treats, toys, and petting as rewards in this class.

To prepare you and your dog for class, please complete the following steps before the first class:

    1. Watch the WHS Manners Class Introduction Video (16 min)
    2. Watch the WHS Trade Game Video (11 min)

    Class requirements:

Vaccinations: All dogs need to be current on Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines before the first class. Be sure to bring your dog’s vaccination records with you to the first class! Please check your records because even if you adopted from us, you may not have all the vaccinations needed for class. Dogs will not be able to participate in class without proper vaccination records – no exceptions.

Social dogs only, please! Dogs that have shown any prior aggression to other dogs or people are NOT allowed in the group class setting under any circumstances (including if you already paid for the class). Aggression and excessive barking and/or reactivity cannot be addressed in this venue; you will not get the attention you deserve and it puts others at risk. Please email us for private training to get the best behavior treatment for your companion: sstein@wihumane.org

Limit attendees: Two adults per dog may attend class (we will send you home with handouts for each exercise and email video links as needed for additional support).

Attendence: If you are unable to make class for any reason, we have written handouts and videos outlining the exercises we did in class. There are no make up classes or refunds for missed classes.

Questions? Uncertain if this class will meet your expectations? Please reach out to Samantha Steinbring at sstein@wihumane.org!

    PAYMENTS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE
If you decide not to attend after registering, your payment will be used as a donation to WHS.

  • Science in Action with Kiki Yablon

Science in Action with Kiki Yablon

Science in Action! The operant side of classical conditioning, how to design and build your dream walk, and the search for “clarity” with dog trainer, Kiki Yablon

    All are welcome!

Join us for an inspiring one-day dog training seminar with Kiki Yablon on Saturday, April 25 from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., where science meets clarity and practical application. This thought-provoking workshop will explore the nuances of classical conditioning, introduce a modern approach to loose leash walking, and dive into the concept of “Clarity”. Whether you’re a dedicated pet owner or a training professional, you’ll leave with fresh perspective and actionable skills.

    Topics

    • Classical Conditioning
What is it, really, and what are we actually teaching when we say that is what we are doing? Are we “changing emotions,” and is classical conditioning the only way to do that? Is classical conditioning all that is happening every time we pair two stimuli together without regard to operant behavior? (Spoiler alert: No, no, and no.)
Kiki will discuss the nuances of what happens when you make one thing predict another, what may actually account for the changes that most people view as “success” in classical conditioning, and discuss/demonstrate how keeping an eye on operant learning when you are pairing two stimuli together can both inspire new easy ways of teaching behaviors and help you do better when changing emotions is your goal.
    • Modern Loose-Leash Walking
Most of us are no longer looking for the majority of our walks with our dogs to be a close heel. But with “looser” walking comes the need for a variety of additional skills for both dog and handler, and a way to smoothly link them together in an ever changing environment. Drawing on ideas from behavior analysis about how “creative,” “novel,” and “adaptive” behavior is developed, Kiki will talk about how to conceptualize your own ideal walk, identify what skills you have and what skills may be missing, teach some skills that she often finds to be  “missing links,” and put them together as a given environment calls for.
    • Looking for “Clarity”
Think more about signage and less about speeding tickets… “Clarity” is a concept; what it looks like in training that the dog does what we are asking or expecting them to do in a particular situation. We have it hammered into our heads that consequences drive behavior, and so that is often the first place we look when we want to make it clear what behavior we want or don’t want. But you know what else is learned via consequences? Antecedents, aka cues. And they don’t just tell the learner which behavior to do. They can make other consequences more or less potent at a given time, they can combine to make each other mean different things, and—very important to the concept of “clarity”—they can signal what is and isn’t available at a given time. And that can reduce the need to use punishment to clarify what not to do.

  • Girl Scout Night

Girl Scouts, are you looking for a fun way to learn about the Wisconsin Humane Society, animals, and maybe even earn a badge along the way? We’ve got you covered!

    Girl Scout troop

Girl Scouts K5 through grade 12 are invited to spend an evening at the Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus. We are offering a fun, hybrid event that will provide troops with content to view ahead of the program along with an in-person, interactive program that engages Girl Scouts in the Wisconsin Humane Society’s mission.

Attendees will interact with an animal, make a fun craft to help the animals at WHS, and learn about pets and how to stay safe around them. Girl Scouts will be able to make progress toward a badge through the program, and troops will be provided with the badge requirement for their level so that Girl Scouts can complete their badge on their own time.

Exclusive Wisconsin Humane Society patches are available to purchase for $2 each at the time of registration.

We can accommodate a total of up to 30 Girl Scouts per time slot. Register early as dates fill quickly.
The fee to attend is $15 per scout and $5 per adult chaperone.
Due to space limitations, we ask that each troop have no more than the Girl Scouts required number of chaperones listed below:

Please notify the youth programs team immediately. For all other situations, if your child is unable to attend, you may offer your registration to another child who meets the age requirements.
