Dog Training Classes

Currently offered at the Milwaukee and Ozaukee Campuses, plus a virtual option!

Bring your puppy or adult dog to the Wisconsin Humane Society Milwaukee Campus for our fun and engaging group training classes! We are excited to bring back in-person manners and puppy classes while continuing to offer virtual manners classes and consultations. Our classes use reward-based training techniques and focus on building the bond between dogs and their owners, relaxation in new spaces, and basic manners.

This class is designed to provide essential socialization with people, other puppies, novel objects, and new spaces. We will also introduce basic learning theory to owners so that they can effectively troubleshoot behavior concerns beyond the end of the class. We will focus on helping dogs learn the skillset to relax in new spaces, offer their owners attention, and the beginnings of a few basic manners. Each week we will reserve a few minutes to discuss common behavior concerns and how to approach them with positive reinforcement based training and effective management.

Virtual Manners Class

Age: Dogs of any age!
Course length: 6 weeks
Fee: $50

This self-directed class is an excellent option for families who would like to build their dog’s manners skillset but have dogs who would not be comfortable in a group class setting. This is also an excellent option for families who might not be within a reasonable driving distance of the Milwaukee Campus, have scheduling conflicts with our other class offerings, or might otherwise find that an in-person group class is not the best fit for them. This class is completely virtual, self-led, and will be accessed from the comfort of your home.

In this class, we will introduce basic learning theory to owners so that they can effectively troubleshoot behavior concerns beyond the end of the class. We will focus on helping dogs learn the skill set to relax in new spaces, offer their owners attention, and the foundation for sit, down, stay, walking nicely on leash, coming when called, and relaxation around food.

Participants must have access to the internet and YouTube via a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Each week, videos and handouts outlining the material will be released to each participant. This class is self-directed, with no further instruction from the instructor beyond the materials released each week. Minimal questions may be answered via email regarding the weekly content. If students find themselves needing additional support beyond the weekly class material, they may consider scheduling an in-person or virtual consultation with our behavior professional.

This class is designed for fearful dogs of all ages. We will work on training and management techniques to support the care of fearful dogs. We will utilize positive reinforcement-based training techniques with each dog as we work to address their needs and practice behavior change processes. This class is not designed for dogs exhibiting aggression or dogs who are excessively vocal or barky. If you are unsure if this class is an appropriate fit for your dog, you can reach out to our instructor at sstein@wihumane.org with a brief history and summary of your dog's fearful behavior. Please note: dogs do not attend week one of class, the first session is for humans only. Dogs will attend the subsequent five weeks of class with their handlers.
