Beagles have arrived!

Update on the Beagles Rescued from Ridglan Farms

Yesterday evening, we welcomed the first 40 beagles from Ridglan Farms. Their journey from the staging site at the Dane County Humane Society to the Wisconsin Humane Society Milwaukee and Green Bay Campuses went off without a hitch. Upon arrival, all the dogs received initial medical exams, flea and tick medication, dewormer, and collars, with foster families eagerly waiting to bring many of them home. Each foster parent was equipped with supplies, food, treats, and information on best practices for interacting with fearful dogs. We are heading back to Madison to pick up more dogs today and tomorrow, with 130 currently slated to come to WHS in total. We anticipate some may be in foster care for a while, but whenever the first pups are ready to find homes they will be listed on our website at www.wihumane.org/adopt!

This first group of pups have officially started a new chapter in life, surrounded by soft toys, gentle support, and warm beds for the first time ever – thanks to you. Knowing our community will step up to help allows us to say yes in times of need, and your donations ensure each dog will have a loving home to call their own someday soon.

If you’d still like to help, it’s not too late and we’d be so grateful:

DONATE SUPPLIES | The intake of these 130 dogs requires extra resources. If you are able to donate supplies, please visit our wish list.

DONATE FUNDS | To support the medical treatment, transportation costs, additional care supplies, and other expenses for this effort, donations of any size can be made online.

FOSTER OTHER ANIMALS | At this moment, all of the Beagles in need of foster care already have pre-arranged placements, but if you’re able to foster another animal currently in care, that helps make more space in the shelter for our new arrivals. Learn more and apply to become a foster family today.

The updates we’ve already gotten from our foster parents have truly warmed our hearts. Lisa shared: “First night in foster for this brave guy. He even went to the bathroom outside this morning. Such a good boy!”

Christina shared: “Ridglan 16 (now known as Phoenix) made himself right at home ❤️ He’s still a little skittish, which is completely understandable, but seems to be doing really well so far ❤️”

Ridglan Farms is a large-scale commercial breeder that breeds and sells beagles for use in research, as well as conducts their own research. The scale of their operations is significant, involving thousands of dogs at a time. This national effort to rescue and rehome these 1,500 dogs is being led by Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy, and other partners, including the Dane County Humane Society, Wisconsin Federated Humane Societies, Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project, and other Wisconsin animal welfare groups. The beagles cared for by WHS will be available for adoption once they are medically and behaviorally cleared.

Community support truly makes it possible for WHS to help large-scale rescues like this, and we couldn’t be more proud to be part of this effort. We do not receive general government funding, and local support is critical to fulfilling our mission of making a difference for animals and the people who love them.

Thank you!
