Adoption Fees, Forms & Process

Mollie is a young pup with a difficult past and a bright future.

Second chances happen every day at the Wisconsin Humane Society. Through expert care and a whole lot of love and commitment, we find homes for thousands of animals each year. There are no time or space limits; adoptable animals stay in adoption until they find new homes.

There are many animals waiting at WHS for loving homes! Since the individual needs of each animal and adopter vary, an Adoption Counselor will work with you one-on-one to help you find the right match for your home. The adoption process generally takes an hour. We recommend that you allow ample time to learn about your new companion. We also suggest coming in during non-peak hours (weekday afternoons) to adopt as it reduces the potential for long waits. Starting June 1, 2011, out-of-state dog adopters may not be able to take home their new companion animal on the same day of adoption, as special medical records will need to be prepared for transport.

Type of animal Fee*
Dogs $119.00 - $449.00
* Please add 5.6% sales tax to all fees listed above.

The Wisconsin Humane Society provides valuable care and treatment for all kinds of animals in need. Last year, we found homes for over 8,500 animals. Some of those animals were in need of an extraordinary amount of medical intervention. Our veterinary team works tirelessly to save dogs with life threatening conditions.

Variable adoption pricing allows us to provide top quality care for all animals. Having a higher adoption fee for some animals that will find a home quickly enables us to care for animals in need of lifesaving medical and behavioral intervention. Our variable pricing helps us to provide excellent care for animals who reside in our shelter for a longer stay.

Included in the dog adoption:
- Spay/Neuter
- First Distemper Vaccination
- Initial Deworming
- Heartworm Testing
- A certificate for a free
veterinary exam
- Microchip Implant, a permanent identification to help protect animals from loss or theft.
- 30 day gift of
ShelterCare Pet Insurance with valid email address.

Adoption Process

To ensure that WHS animals and adopters are properly matched, we have a few adoption guidelines.
  1. Each potential adopter will complete an Adopter Profile that will be reviewed by an adoption counselor and will stay on file for 2 months. To fill out a dog adoption profile online, click here.
  2. A Photo ID with current address will be requested by the adoption counselor. If address does not match, please bring in proof of current address (ex. Utility bill or other bills).
  3. The adoption counselor will ask questions regarding your residence, family members living in the household and other animals living in the home to ensure the best match is made.

If you have room in your home - and your heart - stop by and pay us a visit! If you have any questions please call (414) ANIMALS (264-6257) or send an email to companion@wihumane.org.
