Additional Strep Zoo tests negative for infection

UPDATE 3/1/2018: ALL ADDITIONAL TESTS HAVE COME BACK NEGATIVE FOR STREP ZOO.

After two dogs tested positive for Streptococcus equi subsp. Zooepidemicus (“Strep Zoo”) last week at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s (WHS) Ozaukee Campus, the organization tested about 40 additional dogs at its Ozaukee and Milwaukee Campuses. More than 30 of those test results have come in, and it’s good news: they are all negative for the infection. WHS is still waiting for a handful of results to be processed.

“We are pleased to learn that the first test results have all come back negative, especially as this is a very contagious illness,” said Angela Speed, vice president of communications at WHS. “Our cleaning and handling protocols are designed to minimize disease transmission between animals, and those strict protocols have been working to keep animals as healthy as possible.”

To be on the safe side, WHS will continue to limit dog intake from the public and other shelters until all the results are received, and a deep cleaning of isolation spaces is completed.
