Pets for Life Volunteer Opportunities

The Wisconsin Humane Society has a new outreach initiative supported by The Humane Society of the United States and grant from PetSmart Charities®. The Pets for Life program targets underserved areas with limited access to pet care resources and information. Pet owners in these communities love their animals, and providing them with information and critical services like spay/neuter and vaccinations will help reduce animal suffering, strengthening the bond between animals and people.

Volunteers work with the Community Outreach Specialist in a targeted community to provide information and access to spay/neuter, vaccinations, and wellness care, as well as the mission of the Wisconsin Humane Society.

There are two positions available. We encourage volunteers to be involved in both roles, but it is possible to volunteer for one opportunity based on interest and availability.

Pets for Life Street Team

  • Work with the Community Outreach Specialist and a team of volunteers to initiate positive relationships though door-to-door outreach and conversations with community members in a targeted community
  •
  • Share materials and answer community member’s questions about spay and neuter, vaccinations and pet wellness care
  •
  • Promote upcoming Pets for Life events and programs to the community
  •
  • The commitment for this position is two-four hours per month for a minimum of six months. Outreach opportunities will generally be available one weekday and weekend day per week.
  •

Pets for Life Community Outreach Events

  • Help set up and tear down event materials and supplies
  •
  • Assist clients through the event process, including distributing and filling out paperwork, managing the line, distributing information, and ensuring people and their pets are comfortable
  •
  • Answer community member’s questions about animal care and resources provided by the Wisconsin Humane Society and the Pets for Life program
  •
  • Assist in details and promotion leading up to the event as needed
  •
  • The commitment for this position is two events per year, generally held on weekend days for four to six hours. There may be additional need for volunteer time leading up to the event.
  •

Both positions may be emotionally distressing as team members will see animals and people in less-than-ideal situations. This program is not designed to remove animals from homes but rather build relationships and promote animal care and wellness. Team members will often be outdoors in the Pets for Life targeted community so this position requires standing and walking for long periods of time.
