Stray dog celebrated on new USPS stamp released today
Milwaukee - A new stamp featuring Owney, a celebrated “postal dog” from the late 19th Century, is being released by the United States Post Office today. The stray dog was rescued by postal workers and traveled the world by rail and ship, accompanying mailbags and keeping them safe.
To celebrate Owney the Postal Dog’s special stamp, the Wisconsin Humane Society and the Milwaukee American Topical Association Chapter 5 stamp club are hosting a free public ceremony at the Wisconsin Humane Society, 4500 W. Wisconsin Ave., at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27.
The ceremony will include an honor guard, a special first day stamp cancellation with Owney's picture, a video about Owney, and cacheted envelopes for collectors. Children from the WHS’s Camp Critter will also be attending.
