A Dozen Baby Ducklings Left Orphaned
Driver Runs Down Mom on Highway 100
Milwaukee - She was simply trying to cross the road with her baby ducklings in tow, but a driver ran her down and struck the Mallard mom earlier today on Highway 100, killing her. A few stunned passersby stopped to scoop up the babies and one Good Samaritan brought them to the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
“The woman who brought the ducklings in was shocked to watch a driver seemingly run down the poor mother on purpose,” said Angela Speed, director of community relations and development at WHS. “But there are definitely compassionate people out there, just like her, who helped gather the ducklings to bring them to safety at WHS.”
Wildlife manager Scott Diehl said that the babies will be raised in the Wildlife Center and released when they are ready to fly, in about six weeks. Diehl also mentioned that wild baby season is in full swing, so please be aware of duck crossings, especially near waterways. Mother’s Day is only three weeks away and every mom deserves our respect and compassion.
