Wisconsin Humane Society Launches “Featured First Dog”

MILWAUKEE – The Wisconsin Humane Society is determined to find the Obama family a new pooch. Launched today, a new webpage at http://www.wihumane.org/animals/obamadog will be showcasing dogs who would be a good match for the Obama family. The plan is to feature First Dog suggestions until the Obama’s eventually adopt their new family member.

“So many people in the shelter community are thrilled that the Obama family would like to adopt a shelter dog. What a great precedent to set for anyone wishing to add a new furry family member,” said Angela Speed, Community Relations Manager.

“All of the dogs we’re featuring for the Obama’s will be currently available for adoption. We’ll be selecting dogs who are likely to be good with children and are less likely to cause allergic reactions,” Speed said.

There will be no shortage of options for the Obama family. In a move that garnered international attention, WHS bought out and closed the largest breeding operation in the state this summer to save and re-home 1,600 dogs. Many of these dogs are still looking for new homes, including some adorable puppies.

“Most of these dogs were toy breeds, many of whom are considered low-shed and less likely to cause allergic reactions. There are also several purebred dogs waiting for the right family,” Speed explained. “25-30% of dogs in shelters across the nation are actually purebred.”

All of the dogs available for adoption have been medically examined, spayed or neutered, micro-chipped and vaccinated. Visit www.wihumane.org to view animals available for adoption. The website is updated every 30 minutes.
