Trapped, Shot and Left for Dead
Opossum Survives with Six Babies in Pouch

MILWAUKEE – Christina, an adult Opossum, was out foraging for food when she suddenly found herself caught in a live-trap. The man who trapped Christina then shot Christina several times in the head with a pellet gun.  Assuming she was dead, he wrapped her in a plastic bag and dumped her into a trash can.

A local citizen who witnessed this atrocity went to the trash can and discovered that Christina was still alive! Even more shocking, so were several babies in her pouch.  He rescued her and contacted the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for help.

When Christina arrived at the Center, she was in a state of severe shock. Her babies were carefully removed to be raised in our nursery. After a comprehensive examination and round of X-rays, veterinarians determined that none of the gunshots fractured her skull. Her wounds were dressed and she was given medication for the pain.

In order to save Christina, she needs an operation to remove some of the shrapnel surrounding her face. The Wisconsin Humane Society is now accepting donations to help fund Christina’s surgery. Please donate on their website, stop in, or call 414-ANIMALS to make a donation and help Christina and her six adorable babies.

Photo/Filming Opportunity: A WHS Wildlife representative is available to answer questions regarding Christina’s status. Christina is also available for filming and/or photos. Please contact Angela Speed at 414.431.6104 or aspeed@wihumane.org to schedule an appointment.
