“Twister” the dog survives devastating tornado in Kentucky
One-eyed, three-legged Corgi mix now looking for new home in Wisconsin

Saukville, Wis. – A very special dog is looking for a second chance at the Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus after barely surviving a devastating tornado. “Twister” was found wandering through a field in West Liberty, Kentucky after a tornado ripped through the town on March 3, 2012.

West Liberty was one of the hardest-hit areas in Kentucky and Indiana that weekend, where tornadoes killed at least 34 people and injured more. The town of West Liberty was nearly demolished and had at least 5 reported deaths.

Staff members at WHS were told by shelter officials in Kentucky that dogs were running loose throughout West Liberty, and many animals had to be surrendered to animal shelters because so many families had lost their homes. Several of those dogs, including Twister, were transferred to the Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus this week.

Twister’s front leg was seriously injured and had to be amputated immediately in Kentucky; his eye was previously missing but needed additional surgery when he arrived in Wisconsin. Now, the 3-year-old dog is almost fully recovered and looking for a new home.

Despite his injuries, his prognosis is excellent. Dr. Randal Zeman of the WHS Ozaukee Campus said that Twister was appropriately named. “He’s definitely got a lot of energy and despite being 3-legged, he is more active than many dogs his age!”
