7.6.10 Carmen has gone home! She was thrilled to learn that she was headed for a big backyard in Wauwatosa with Erin, whom she immediately gravitated to. Thank you to everyone who followed her story and to those who made donations for her care.

7.6.10
Carmen meets Erin, who waited since 2:00 a.m. in the WHS parking lot, simply in hopes that Carmen would become available for adoption.

UPDATE! Carmen will be available for adoption today, Tuesday, July 6. She is doing much better and is looking forward to her new home.

Neglected Golden Faces Sunnier Days Ahead

It felt so good to have the metal screening removed from her matted fur.
Carmen smiles through her ordeal, happy to be in a safe place.

Carmen is a beautiful 3-year-old Golden Retriever with a heart as golden as her fur. When she first arrived at WHS, the staff immediately fell in love with her gentle nature and trusting demeanor.

Sadly, someone had treated this sweet girl terribly, neglecting her health and ignoring her yearning for love and acceptance.

Embedded in Carmen’s matted fur were painful coils of wire and large pieces of hard mesh screening. Behind her ear and on her stomach were open lesions. Staff and volunteers tenderly removed the wiring and treated the raw sores, while Carmen offered kisses and nose rubs in appreciation.

As if this wonderful girl hadn’t been through enough, further examination also showed that Carmen is positive for heartworm. She was immediately given treatment, which will continue over several days as her body clears out the dead parasites.

Would you like to donate to Carmen's medical fund? Please make sure to include "For Carmen" in the Comments section of the donation form.

We rely entirely on the community's support and are deeply grateful that people like you enable us provide care for neglected dogs like Carmen.

With your help, WHS will give this special girl a second chance to heal and to find a loving home. If you are interested in adopting, please bookmark the available dogs web page and keep an eye out for Carmen; all adoptions are first-come, first-served.
