As a part of its "Be Kind to Animals Week" festivities, the Wisconsin Humane Society sponsors a poetry contest for kids. Here are this year's winning entries.
"He is" By: Allyce Taylor
He's kind and loyal,
cuddly and sweet.
With a dog like that it can't be beat.
When he kiss me,
it makes me giggle.
But, it's most adorable when his tail wiggles.
His soft white fur,
so easy to brush.
When I'm running home to see him, it gives me a rush.
He leaps and jumps,
when I walk in the door.
Everyday I love him more and more.
I feel so safe,
when I know he's around.
He is the best protection that I have found.
"Humane" By: Emilia Price-Neuman
Whether you are in the wilderness or desert,
In a city or jungle, in water or on a farm,
Be kind to animals
And
Help to keep them from harm.
I think of the animals that are endangered
And wonder if there is a solution?
I think we could start by helping the environment
And cutting back on pollution.
Before getting a pet, think about their care.
Do you have the time, patience, space and love to share?
Be kind to animals
Especially during the week of May 4-11, 2003
Whether the animals live on land, in air, or sea.
My wish is that animals won't have to live in fear,
And that people will be humane to animals throughout the year.
"Pasha and Snowflake" By: Samantha Goodwin
Pets need love and care
And give affection in return.
Some give you sloppy wet kisses
Happy to show their love for you.
Always faithful, no matter what type.
Another soul to love
Needing you as you need them.
Delighting in being together.
So please don't hurt them
Never abuse them
Only offer love.
Wild or tame, all deserve the best
Food, shelter, water, and care.
Lifelong friends pets can be
As loyal as the day is long.
Keep coming back for more love
Ever wanting your attention.
"Put Your Best Paw Forward!" By: Amanda Meyers
As you read this poem
I just have to say,
Put your best paw forward
And help an animal today.
You know if they were people
They'd do the same for you,
So go the Humaine Socitity
Make an animal feel good too.
There are lots of animals
And so I dare you,
Go out and help an animal
Someday it might help you!
