How to Safely Contain a Bat

If a bat has bitten or is suspected of biting a human or animal, it is important to safely contain him and contact your local health department for possible rabies testing. It is vital that you are not bitten by a bat, so use the following precautions.

  1. Wear leather gloves that can not be penetrated by the bat's teeth.
  2. Place a coffee can or cardboard box upside-down, over the bat.
  3. Slide a thick piece of cardboard between the surface and the box.
  4. Securely tape the cardboard in place.
    • Air holes should be added, but be sure they are smaller than a quarter.
    • Do not leave any gaps 3/8 of an inch or larger in the container.
  5. Call your local Health Department.
