Care for bird baths & feeders

Birdbaths are a charming addition to a backyard and provide a service to birds, but it's important to remember that dirty water can spread disease. If you have a bath, change the water frequently. The birdbath itself also should be cleaned occasionally with a bleach and water solution. Two-piece birdbaths with a heavy top on a pedestal are not recommended, as they have been known to fall on and injure larger animals like raccoons.

Bird feeders are a delightful way to attract birds to your yard. Different types of feeders and bird seed mixes can even attract specific types of birds. Whatever the kind, bird feeders should be cleaned at least twice a year with a 10 percent bleach (90 percent water) solution, because a dirty feeder can make birds sick and spread disease. Feeders should also be cleaned any time mold appears.
